John Sullivan goes into the Betty Ford Clinic for alcoholism

U.S. Rep. John Sullivan, R-Okla., checked himself into the Betty Ford Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center in California because of his addiction to alcohol.

Sullivan is taking an unspecified leave of absence from Congress. Typically, alcoholics who go to the Betty Ford Clinic for the first time stay about 30 days for treatment.

Sullivan has a history of alcohol abuse that goes back to his teen years and involved at least one episode with the police. It was an issue that surfaced in his first campaign in 2002. He identified it in 2002 as an isolated incident and in public speeches, he advised young people of the dangers of alcoholism.

“To ensure my success in this fight, I’ve decided to take a temporary leave of absence from Congress,” Sullivan said in a statement.  “I value my relationship with the citizens of Oklahoma’s First Congressional District, whom I am privileged and honored to have served for the past eight years. So, I wanted to be open and honest on this tough situation.

“I ask for your continued support and prayers as I face the challenges that lay ahead. I look forward to returning to serve and work for you in the House of Representatives as soon as possible.”

Should Sullivan decide to resign, it is believed that Gov. Brad Henry would set a date for a special election to elect a replacement.
