John 3:16 Mission needs donations

John 3:16 Mission needs donations of frozen turkeys to help feed thousands of low-income, Tulsa-area families and homeless people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.

“The low income families of Tulsa are really feeling the pain of the difficult economy,” said John 3:16 Executive Director, Rev. Steve Whitaker. “We’ve seen a 51 percent increase over last year in the number of struggling families coming to us for help. That’s why we are asking the caring people of Tulsa and surrounding communities to help make a Thanksgiving meal possible for thousands of needy families and homeless people.”

Frozen turkeys will be accepted at the following locations: The Mission’s shelter at 506 N. Cheyenne Ave.; the Mission’s Family & Youth Center at 2027 N. Cincinnati Ave.

Starting Friday, Nov. 20, frozen turkeys may be dropped off at Under the Sun Garden Center locations at 91st St. and Sheridan Road and 51st St. and Harvard Ave.

Additionally, Under the Sun Garden Center will be matching turkeys brought to its locations.

John 3:16 Mission encourages individuals, churches, businesses and other organizations to participate in this year’s turkey drive. In 2008, the Mission distributed 5,252 turkey baskets (including trimmings) with food enough to feed over 20,000 people during Thanksgiving and beyond. The turkeys will be distributed Nov. 23-25, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day at John 3:16 Mission’s Family & Youth Center, 2027 N. Cincinnati Ave. Call 587-1186 for more information.
