OBITUARY Anne V. N. Solliday McDowell
Anne McDowell was born on June 4, 1926 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Albert Lafayette (Sol) Solliday and Daisy Moody Solliday. The family moved to Tulsa in 1930 where she attended Lee Elementary, Horace Mann Jr. High, and Central High Schools, Class of 1944. She attended Monticello College, Alton Ill. and graduated from The University of Oklahoma, Class of 1948. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority there.
In April 1949, she married Robert D. White of Muskogee with whom she had three children, Dee Anne, Robert M. and Jeanne W. She left this life and her earthly body on December 7, 2009, in Salina, Kansas, at age 83.
In 1986, she married Robert W. McDowell, Jr., who survives her. He brought to her five step-children with four grandchildren. Bob moved to Tulsa from Denver where they became involved in Akdar Shrine and Republican Party activities, as well as her regular Bridge and High School class functions. In 1990 she assisted Bob in a campaign for State House.
In 1993 they established a home on Monkey Island, with a city house, and became involved up there where she was active in party affairs, including tolerating and supporting his State Senate candidacy in 1996 and County Chairmanship for four years in 1999.
Her life was one of a high level of activity with many interests.
She was an avid player of Bridge, supported her Delta Gamma charity, the DVIS charity in Tulsa, and her churches. She was very proud of obtaining her Private Pilot license in 1962. Her circle of friends covers virtually the entire nation and she maintained communication with them until just recently. She was known as a ‘beautiful lady’ and was greatly admired by those who came in contact with her.
On arrival in Tulsa, the family joined Trinity Episcopal Church, where she was proud to be a member of the “old timers” group.
She was involved in the establishment of an Episcopal Church in McPherson, Kansas, and her activities included serving as pilot for the Bishop of Western Kansas. On return to Tulsa in 1975, she transferred to St. John’s Episcopal Church and was also active in St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Grove, while there.
In the last three years, she had become involved in Kirk of the Hills.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at Kirk of the Hills, Presbyterian in Tulsa.
