Attorney General Drew Edmondson fights term limit bill

State Sen. Randy Brogdon, who authored the amendment to send a term limits proposal to a vote of the people, commented on criticism of the proposal by Attorney General Drew Edmondson.

“Contrary to claims made by the attorney general, it is not the intent nor is it the effect of the amendment to SB 1987 to retroactively apply term limits to current officeholders.

“Furthermore, Attorney General Edmondson’s stated practice is to avoid commenting on pending legislation. It is very disappointing that in this case he is deviating from his usual practice,” stated Brogdon, R-Owasso.

Brogdon’s amendment was attached to Senate Bill 1987. It limits statewide officeholders to 12 years of service. Term limits already apply to the governor and the Legislature.

Rep. Trebor Worthen, R-Oklahoma City, gave a response  to inaccurate claims in a recent Tulsa World editorial about Senate Bill 1987

“The term limits bill is not retroactive, as some have incorrectly claimed,” Worthen said. “It will only apply, if passed in the Senate and approved by a vote of the people, to statewide officials elected in 2010 and beyond. The bill is not targeted at one politician or one political party, but rather it is meant to usher out all career politicians, regardless of who they are or what party they claim. This is an issue the voters have heavily supported, and any attempt to misrepresent the bill’s intent is nothing more than political posturing.”
