Kirk decision is simply wrong

It doesn’t make sense.

The members of Kirk of the Hills Church built the building where they worship. They have lovingly cared for one of the most beautiful churches in South Tulsa for decades.

They invested more than $2 million in a wonderful organ.

But instead of Tulsans enjoying the fruit of their own labor, District Court Judge Jefferson Sellers decided to give that beautiful building to Presbyterian Church USA, a group that has not invested one dime in Tulsa in Kirk of the Hills.

In a step of faith, the membership of Kirk of the Hills two years ago voted to leave that denomination because it was abandoning its traditional view of the Bible as being inerrant. Member churches all over the country were shocked at the liberal viewpoint of homosexuality that was being forced on them.

Kirk of the Hills took this bold step knowing it would result in a legal fight. It cost the pastoral staff their insurance coverage and pension plan.

There’s a price to pay to stand up to the truth.

Had the denomination paid for any part of the building, a case could be made for its ownership or part ownership. No, it made one small loan to the church and that was repaid in full.

Presbyterian Church USA had to win this lawsuit. It sets a precedent for other churches who want to leave. The message is clear – you can leave, but we get the keys to your building.

The decision is being appealed. Tulsa voters should take note however, that Judge Sellers made this decision apart from a jury. He is up for confirmation in 2010.

Will this be the end of Kirk of the Hills?

Not by a long shot.

The church is not the building – it is the people. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Kirk of the Hills has grown since its valiant stand. And it will continue to prosper.
